Top 50 of 2024

Well here we go again- the near impossible annual task of sifting through thousands upon thousands of photos and selecting a mere 50.

I slowed my productivity this year - albeit only slightly, as I was out of the country exploring the world for nearly 8 weeks this year, across 19 cities in 11 countries across 4 continents, totalling over 71,000km travelled.

Although that doesn’t mean I wasn’t still unconscionably busy, as I end the year hovering around 190 shoots, resulting in 57,000 photos and nearly 10 hours of video footage produced.

These totals have gone down under the monstrous peak of last year, however the quality of shoot vastly increased. From travelling to Antarctica, hiking the coast of Wales, bowling with the Raptors and taking photos of Taylor Swift, there was no shortage of ‘wow’ in my experiences. Because of this, it genuinely was IMPOSSIBLE to pick a flat 50. I’ve curved the rules a little bit this year, but it can be our little secret.

Now for my favourite recurring theme in these yearly posts. The thank you that belongs to all those in my life who had to deal with the lack-of-knowing and ever-changing whirlwind of trying to make plans with me. I know my life is hectic and while I love it…

I understand the strain it can put on relationships with family and friends. Thank you for your flexibility and your unconditional support of my life. I’ll never express it in its full capacity.

And once I again I repeat the sentiment- by no means are these necessarily my best photos of 2024. These are the 50 photos from this year that stuck out to me the most, whether it be compositionally, for the opportunity to take it, or the moment forever associated with it.

So thank you to 2024, for becoming the single greatest adventure to be dreamed or lived, and to look forward to the knowing that 2025 will expand upon my experiences.

And also, to the 50 photos yet to come.

1. “Pensive Penguin”

Antarctica - February

This may not have been exactly what you were expecting for the top photo of 2024, but this is one of those ‘the moment makes the photo’ photos. One of the landing days, after getting off the zodiac on shore, the group had largely walked to our checkpoint, eager to see the next penguin colony. I strayed slightly from the group, and turned around at the immense landscape I was immersed in. I had a moment of reflective solitude, alone in my thoughts and taking in exactly what I was living in the moment. I had made it to the bottom of the world, and was staring at the most breath-taking place on Earth. When I finally glanced to my left, I noticed a single Adélie penguin doing the exact same thing. Away from his colony, he was not walking, or searching for pebbles. He was simply stood, appreciating his surroundings. He took a deep breath, and we both stood - apart yet together, alone but in company - taking in the beauty that surrounded us.
